Track and Field

So I have been coaching track and field at Fremont High this spring. It was an opportunity that I couldn't pass up, I get to work for the same guy that was my coach in high school at Fremont and he was honestly one of the best coaches I've ever had. That's a lot of coaches since I started running track in the 5th grade, went to two different high schools and ran at Weber State. So I get to learn from the best, and he told me to bring Adam along every day with me, I didn't even have to ask! Sadly I had to quit my babysitting job, but I don't plan on being able to coach next year with two little kids, it would just be too hard, so I decided I should take the opportunity this year. So I'm enjoying my spring outside everyday in the afternoon and some REALLY long track meets on Saturdays, but it's all good because Adam absolutely loves it, and I think he likes having one-on-one time with Dad on Saturdays. He hardly wants to leave practice everyday, since he gets to play around the track and on the high jump and polevault pads and the sand pit. I've decided I love coaching, but it's not as easy I thought it would be. My exact thoughts were, 'Come on, I've done this sport for most of my life, I know it like the back of my hand!' It's a little different trying to do what a coach asks and actually being the coach and figuring out the little details when something needs fixed on their technique! But I'm learning and I like it. All my athletes are good kids, and a couple are great kids that are the ideal athlete that not only has the talent but will do anything you ask and always give their best effort. They are so coachable!

Adam loves the high jump pads, he thinks he has to get on in between each jump, which can be a pain but, all my athletes love him so they don't care.

Usually I say no coloring at practice, but I made an exception for this little athlete to help occupy his time. Otherwise he doesn't share to high jump pads with the other athletes.

Adam also likes the sand pit and tries to be a little too helpful with the rake and shovel and always ends up raking right in the middle of the pit when my kids are trying to jump. Or he stands in the middle of the runway and wants a turn. He actually knows to run down and to jump in the sand, his technique leaves a lot to be desired but he has the heart and tries so hard.

His absolute favorite part of practice is when we help out with polevault. He's definitely more of a hindrance than a help, but he's so happy and cracks me up. He can climb up the front of the polevault pads since they slope down and he'll sneak up there. I think this is his favorite since I can't reach him because the pads are so big, I have to climb up there and he just giggles and giggles so hard(I would laugh my head off too seeing a huge pregnant lady climbing up after me). This last picture is of Matt's cousin that is one of my favorite athletes (yes coaches can have favorites, we just aren't supposed to show it.) He is so good with Adam and he can get Adam to go to him, he's holding on to him so that he doesn't get hit as someone vaults.

My kids thought of a solution for me to come back and coach for them next year. I think it's a horrible solution, but it's funny so I thought I'd share.

Matt's cousin: (after finding out I won't be coaching next year) 'Why? you can just bring your baby too'

Me: 'It's hard enough with one let alone two. They'd be running around everywhere'

Matt's cousin: 'Just tell Adam to stay by you and your baby won't be walking yet'

Me: (laughing)'Yes, tell a 2 1/2 year old to stay next to me! That won't work'

Matt's cousin: 'Then we can get a leash and duct tape Adam to the football goal post'

The duct tape comment was said so matter-of-factly, I thought is was hilarious. Sorry kiddo, but I don't want the CPS called on me.

I bet Adam just loves it! I love all the pictures of him enjoying himself. And I do agree that you would have your hands quite full if you took two kids to practice next year.

I'm glad it's going good and that Adam enjoys it. I bet you are a great coach! I can tell just by the fact that everyone wants you to come back and that Matt's cousin is trying to get creative. You're in demand Jess!

Haha! That sounds like a great plan to take your kids to practice :) When we moved to UT Andrew and I thought it would be ok to tie our dog to the back of the car and let him run here bc there wasn't room in the car. We were serious too!

You are so funny... i love your writing style!! That's so awesome you're a coach, I totally see you doing amazingly at it too!!

in fact, one day, if i ever want to be in any type of organized sport-- you'd be my number one choice for coach. Or Mr. Telck. Close call there. NOT.

ooohhh burn, Mr. Telck. Burn.

Please call me next week if you do need a babysitter. I know Beau would love to have Adam come and play.

Better yet, duct tape Adam to your back and baby to the front! Think of the workout! Or tape them to the runners... maximize THEIR workouts! Think "free weights"!
